Here’s Peter’s second missive from Japan:
I visited the Mingei exhibition called, “Another Kind of Art”. Mingei originates from a movement that recognizes the beauty in everyday items, a theme which is close to my heart. The exhibit was at 21_21 Design Sight Museum, in Tokyo, and organized by Naoto Fukusawa, director of the museum, renowned product designer, and co-author of Super Normal, Designs of the Ordinary.
The 21_21 Design Sight Museum opened in 2007 and was created by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake.
“Another Kind of Art” introduced Fukusawa’s personal photographs of his collection of artisan-made objects and featured an additional 146 selected items made by anonymous artisans. (See pictures 1-4 of the Mingei exhibit)
Before signing off, here’s a photo of a beautiful bamboo Christmas tree in an Tokyo hotel lobby and a photo of a Christmas light show at Roppongi, Midtown Tokyo – compliments of Harry Winston.
‘Tis the Season!
Happy Holidays to all!
